Long walks means big trout…

P1000727

The reason most Kiwis don’t wear waders is because they’re a hindrance during long walks.  Even breathable waders will have you sweating in no time, bad news when several miles of tramping lay ahead.  So with shorts and hiking boots the order of the day, generally speaking the further you’re prepared to walk the better the trout fishing will be.  No great secret then that Fly Odyssey's Mat McHugh and I endured some serious leg work to put us in the land of big trout…

Nothing or nobody in sight is a good prompt to start fishing…especially when blessed with aqua-blue water

~The rewards of a long hike are slabs like this heavily spotted trout that were generally free rising when it came to taking our dry flies~
